Orlando is one city known for its attractions than anything else. Land of sun and surf, Orlando, Florida was believed to be founded in 1837. The origin of the city's name varies among historians. Some believe that the name came from a plantation owner named Orlando Reeves, whose name was carved on a tree and was mistaken by pioneer settlers as his gravesite. Other accounts say that Orlando Reeves was a soldier. Today a memorial sits beside Lake Eola to commemorate the spot where he supposedly fell.
The main draws of the city aside from its beaches are its world class theme parks, led by Universal Studios and Disney World. The city's tourist industry benefits from its humid subtropical climate, with two major seasons each year. The city also has a prosperous retail market, one of the largest in the US, as well as a thriving culture and arts community. The city is home to the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orlando Science Center and the Morse Museum of Art, which houses Tiffany art glass, pottery, jewelry and exhibits of the Tiffany home. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Central Florida also makes its home in Orlando, Florida.
