New York City, known by many names including the "Big Apple", is the most densely populated city in the United States. It is home to many famous landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building and Ellis Island. Each year, millions of American and foreign tourists pass along the streets of NYC frequenting destinations such as Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Rockefeller Center, The Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden.
The city is also a shopping, fashion and theatrical center. Luxury shopping destinations can be found along 5th Avenue and Madison Square. Fashion shows are conducted at Bryant Park during fashion week and Broadway is home to several historic theaters that hold shows every night of the week.
The city has been the setting of several movies and TV shows; most notable are 'Sex and the City' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Financial and political institutions have also made NYC their home. These include the United Nations headquarters and the New York Stock Exchange, located in Wall Street. Until its 2001 demise, the city was also the location of the fateful World Trade Center twin towers.
Culturally diverse, it is estimated that over 170 languages are spoken within New York City. Over 36% of the population was born outside of the US. New York has been nicknamed, 'The City that Never Sleeps' because of the 24-hour availability of mass transit and the business and social centers that never seem to close up.
